The themes of time, reality, and light go beyond their visual representations, prompting a deeper reflection on how we experience and interpret the world. Time : Shane Guffogg Shane Guffogg asks, "How can I condense time and space into a single moment?" His works transcend the linear flow of time and space, merging them into a unified moment of infinite potential. Through layered abstraction and a complex interplay of colors and forms, Guffogg invites viewers to experience the simultaneity of eternity within a fleeting instant. His art challenges us to reconsider time not as a rigid construct but as a fluid and expansive dimension. Reality : Kim Kang Yong Kim Kang Yong poses the question, "Is what I see truly real?" Through his brick artworks, he examines the fundamental nature of perception, exploring the tension between visual illusion and physical reality. The bricks, which appear both tangible and ethereal, disrupt our assumptions about the material world. His work compels us to confront the subjectivity of our experiences, questioning the line between what we perceive and what truly exists. Light : Kim Sea Joong Kim Sea Joong inquires, "How can light be embodied on a flat surface?" This exploration extends into space and semi-relief works, where light becomes more than a visual element—it becomes a medium that defines and reshapes spatial experience. Through his innovative approach, Kim Se Joong blurs the boundaries between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, offering a transcendent interplay of light and shadow that invites viewers to reconsider the role of light in shaping perception. Back February 12, 2026 Around The Paintings "Around the Paintings," was a curated tasting event at Gallery Chang NY that celebrated Korean heritage, art and culture. Centered on the works of artist Cho Yong Ik, his oeuvre was highlighted by thoughtful pairings with curated rice wine from Hana Makgeolli, an artisanal brewery and a selection of small bites from MissKOREA BBQ. It is widely accepted that Cho Yong Ik is one of the most important figures of Korean abstraction, having represented the country at various Biennales and with definitive retrospectives at key institutions, including Olivier Malingue in London, and Edouard Malingue in Hong Kong as well as Han Gallery and Sungkok Gallery in Seoul. A leading figure of the Dansaekhwa movement, a Korean artistic movement of the 1970s, the works of Ik and his contemporaries within the movement wed Eastern philosophy with Western minimalism. Attendees were delighted to learn of the breadth of Ik's work, Gallery Chang's collection spans decades from his collection --including his abstract figures, acrylic dot paintings, and wave series. The pieces vary in size, method and emotive evocation, but they are united in their meditative quality. The essence of Cho Yong Ik's abstract language was translated first by a pairing of Hyunmi Takju, a dry and medium bodied wine with notes of warm chestnut and earth. While sipping, viewers observed the Textural Grey Painting , noting how the subtle variations present in the wine mirrored those in the painting. This was enjoyed with Korean pancakes, buchimgae, which has a visual texture that mirrors the texture of the painting. The following pairing was Ik's Pastel Geometric Abstraction works with Omija Makgeolli, which is medium dry, effervescent with notes of pink peppercorn and citrus. These paintings are more structured than the prior, teasing images of men in period attire, though nothing feels rigid or dominant in these figures --whose faces and hands remain unpainted. As with Ik's other paintings, meaning is not overt and the work operates through balance and restraint. Notably, these paintings make use of the traditional five korean colors "obangsaek," which is why we paired it with the five berry flavor profile of Omija Makgeolli. To balance the wine, the light bite was hwajeon, a korean flower pancake. The soft texture and delicate floral notes of the pancake complemented the oil painting's tonal sensitivity, reinforcing their sense of harmony. Our third pairing was Takju 16, a heavy bodied and near dry wine with floral and fruity notes of melon, green apple and banana and bulgogi salad. The contrast of the flavors of the wine and the beef salad mirrored the contrast in the painting, which was the most colorful work in the collection on display. This moment was the evening's anchor, offering substance and warmth in both flavor and form. Structural Color Field Painting is oil on canvas, created in 1966. The final pairing was Hwaju 12, a light, dry earthy wine with bright lactic acid, paired with Gyeongdan, which are glutinous rice cakes filled with red bean paste. Our dessert was made even sweeter by the sight of Cho Yong Ik's Wave Series , which, like the food and wine pairing, benefit from their restraint. Each "wave" depicted on the surface of the varying canvas represents a repeated flick of Ik's wrist, suggesting technical exertion on the artist's part --and yet observing these works gives the opposite feeling, a sense of calm. To close the evening with these works left attendees in a state of joyful reflection, having had a thoughtful and tasty experience with us here at Gallery Chang. Back Gallery Chang Presents Alison Van Pelt: First New York Solo Exhibition Alison Van Pelt: 40 Years Painting Portraits February 19 – March 31, 2026 Gallery Chang, New York Gallery Chang, New York presents Alison Van Pelt: 40 Years Painting Portraits , the artist’s first solo exhibition in New York, on view from February 19 through March 31. Alison Van Pelt is widely known for her highly refined portraits that often appear photographic at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, the works reveal themselves clearly as paintings. Her paintings are not built through multiple layered surfaces, but rather completed on a single condensed surface. She combines acrylic and oil paint and incorporates silver and gold leaf to create light and depth. While the images may initially resemble photographs, the intentionally visible brushstrokes emphasize that these works are fundamentally paintings completed through the movement of the artist’s hand. Her works are often mistaken for photographs, a perception the artist embraces. At the same time, by leaving certain brushstrokes clearly visible, she reveals the materiality of painting and reminds viewers that the image is not a simple reproduction but the result of a painterly process. Alison Van Pelt has painted widely recognized public figures such as David Beckham and Chris Cornell, while also creating works that carry symbolic and cultural narratives, such as the Spotted Jack Rabbit series. In this way, her work moves between iconic individuals and symbolic subjects, expanding the boundaries of portraiture. Born in Los Angeles in 1963, Alison Van Pelt studied at UCLA, ArtCenter College of Design, and Otis Parsons, and later at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy. Influenced by artists such as Chuck Close, Agnes Martin, Robert Rauschenberg, and Helmut Newton, her subjects range widely from animals to boxers, celebrities, spiritual leaders, Native American warriors, and heads of state. Van Pelt blurs and repaints classical portrait imagery, repeatedly building and dissolving the image to create works with a beautifully faded and mysterious atmosphere. Her refined technique—seen in delicate light and shadow, layered paint, ambiguous yet careful brushwork, and restrained, meditative gestures—ultimately enhances the humanity of her subjects. As a result, her portraits are often described as mysterious, human, and deeply evocative rather than idealized. Junhwan Chang, Director of Gallery Chang, stated, “We are very pleased to present Alison Van Pelt’s first solo exhibition in New York. Back Two Masters Meet at Gallery Chang Seoul: A Dual Exhibition by Kim Kang Yong and Shane Guffogg Gallery Chang will present a two-person exhibition featuring two leading figures of Korean and American contemporary art—Kim Kang Yong and Shane Guffogg—this coming October at Gallery Chang Seoul, located inside the Oakwood Premier COEX Center. Titled Infinite Dialogue , the exhibition unfolds as a stage for a philosophical exchange in which two masters from East and West pose questions and offer responses in their own distinct visual languages. Over the past five decades, Kim Kang Yong has explored the essence of existence and perception through the everyday motif of the “brick.” His canvases, built up with layers of sand and shadow, are not simply depictions of objects but are widely regarded as philosophical spaces that question the very act of seeing. Shane Guffogg, meanwhile, has constructed a body of work that moves fluidly across the boundaries of light and time, science and art, grounded in the fundamental question: How can time and space be compressed into a single moment? Last year, in conjunction with the 60th Venice Biennale’s official theme, Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere , Guffogg held a solo exhibition at the Scala Contarini del Bovolo Museum in Venice titled At the Still Point of the Turning World – Strangers of Time . Special Lecture by Shane Guffogg, “From Einstein to AI,” Successfully Concluded Chungbuk National University held a special lecture on the 22nd, inviting contemporary artist Shane Guffogg to speak on the theme From Einstein to AI: Art as a New Language . The event explored how the convergence of art and science-based technologies may shape future society. Organized by the university’s Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, the lecture drew approximately 80 students and faculty members, reflecting strong interest in interdisciplinary dialogue between art and science. In his talk, Guffogg focused on the intersections of artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, and art, explaining through diverse examples how art can generate new forms of social language.
