South Korea, 1934-2023 Artist Biography Works Next Cho Yong Ik South Korea, 1934-2023 BIOGRAPHY Cho Yong-Ik was a prominent South Korean artist and a pioneering figure in the Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) movement. Born on February 20, 1934, in Bukcheong, Korea, he pursued his education at Seoul National University in the mid-1960s, studying under the esteemed art historian, critic, and painter Kim Byung-ki. This mentorship instilled in him the importance of maintaining artistic independence, a principle that became central to his practice. Throughout his seven-decade-long career, Cho developed a distinctive approach within the Dansaekhwa movement. While his contemporaries often focused on monochromatic palettes, Cho's work stood out for its incorporation of color and dynamic compositions. His paintings are characterized by energetic abstractions featuring lyrical scratches, whisks, and flicks, emphasizing process, materiality, and systematic organization. This unique style allowed him to push the boundaries of Korean abstract art. Cho's contributions to art were recognized both nationally and internationally. He participated in significant exhibitions such as the Paris Biennale in 1961 and 1969, and the São Paulo Bienal in 1967. His works have been showcased in esteemed institutions, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul and Gwacheon, the Leeum Museum of Art, and the Fukuoka Museum of Art in Japan. In 2016, he held a major solo exhibition at the Sungkok Art Museum in Seoul, further cementing his legacy in the art world. Beyond his artistic practice, Cho was dedicated to education and the advancement of the Korean art community. He served as a professor at Chugye University for the Arts from 1974 to 1992 and held the position of vice executive director of the Korean Fine Arts Association between 1977 and 1983. Cho Yong-Ik passed away on July 2, 2023, at the age of 89. His legacy endures through his innovative contributions to Korean abstract art and his influence on subsequent generations of artists. Back “Mirror-Like Paintings”: Jimi Gleason’s First Solo Exhibition in Seoul A solo exhibition by contemporary artist Jimi Gleason, Illuminated Silence , is being held at Gallery Chang Seoul, located in the Oakwood Premier COEX Center, through June 28. Centered on the theme “silence painted with light,” this exhibition marks the final chapter of Gleason’s Coast to Coast touring project, which concludes in Seoul after presentations in New York and Los Angeles. Using metallic pigments and specialized materials, Gleason creates mirror-like paintings that shift according to the viewer’s movement and the angle of light. His works metaphorically express light that emerges from stillness, and the silence revealed by that light. Back Gallery Chang Presents Time-Shift Exhibition in an Abandoned Building Gallery Chang is presenting a time-shift curatorial exhibition titled CHASE Project: Phase Shift , using an abandoned building as its exhibition site. Originally conceived at the multidisciplinary cultural space “The Bank” in Middletown, Upstate New York, the project has been expanded and re-presented as a new version at Gallery Chang in Manhattan. Three artists—Shin Kiwoun, Kim Hong Bin, and Anon—are participating. The exhibition first presents works by Kim Hong Bin and Anon through August 5, followed by Shin Ki Woun’s solo presentation Illusion of Permanence through August 12. Shin also participated in the restoration project of Nam June Paik’s The More the Better at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. Video artist Shin Ki woun explores the meanings of “existence” and “non-existence” through images that inhabit a worldview of “generation” and “disappearance,” adopting and experimenting with technical methods that push beyond the boundaries of art. Gallery Chang explains that Shin revives images of memories that were once real but soon vanished—becoming ambiguous and lost—by using time-lapse filming to reconstruct them as psychological spaces within memory. Textile artist An On has developed her own visual language through flat works, reliefs, and installations using textiles as her primary medium. By tearing, layering, and stitching fabrics that she has printed herself, she creates surfaces that are both painterly and sculptural. Gallery Chang notes that An’s textile collages contain narratives of color and layers of sensation within meticulous structures. They visualize natural temporality, personal emotions, and fragments of memory through the materiality of fabric. Repeated cutting, reassembling, and sewing leave traces of contemplation, while restrained vertical and horizontal compositions maintain a steady rhythm, and colors evoke sensations of season, light, and emotion. Artist Kim Hong Bin, who works under the name “VANHADA,” expresses themes such as “the beauty one seeks” and “the challenge of something new.” According to Gallery Chang, Kim reflects the “anxiety of an unsettled life” in his works, exaggerating colors to express how he absorbs and even enjoys stimuli and stress from his environment. Working mainly with acrylic on flat surfaces, he uses paint like stickers and creates various forms by crumpling, tearing, and reconfiguring his materials. A graduate of the Oriental Painting department at Hongik University, Kim has gained recognition through numerous solo and group exhibitions for her mastery of traditional Korean painting techniques. Her work blends the spiritual and emotional, offering comfort and solace to viewers through its delicate beauty. Kim’s notable series, Waiting and The Road to Hanggeum-ri, evoke a sense of nostalgia and tranquility. These works showcase her use of traditional pigments, including bunchae and seokchae, techniques rooted in classical Korean art. Inspired by the soft, compassionate styles of legendary Korean female painters such as Chun Kyung Ja and Lee Sook Ja, Kim’s work continues their legacy with a modern sensibility. Back Kim Kang Yong Solo Exhibition 《REALITY + IMAGE》 Opens The solo exhibition 《REALITY + IMAGE: Revisiting the Works of the 2010s》 by master of Korean contemporary art Kim Kang Yong will be held from September 30 to October 22 at Gallery Chang New York, located on 55th Street in Manhattan. This exhibition centers on major paintings created during the early to mid-2010s, when the artist was based in New York. Kim Kang Yong’s paintings explore the boundary between materiality and image through the use of distinctly Korean materials such as sand and fragments of brick. From a distance, the works resemble photographs, but as viewers approach, the density of texture and material presence becomes vividly apparent. His practice is built on a dual structure of “reality” and “illusion,” “material” and “image.” During his years in New York, Kim actively engaged with the international art scene, achieving an artistic synthesis that combined contemporary universality with his own distinctive formal language. This exhibition is especially meaningful in that it revisits the representative works from that period in New York once again in 2025. Kim Kang Yong was born in 1950 in Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province, and graduated from Hongik University College of Fine Arts. For decades, he has worked primarily in painting, presenting his work at major museums and galleries in Korea and abroad. Through his sand-based paintings in particular, he has established a unique visual language and is recognized as one of the leading figures in Korean contemporary art. Gallery Chang has for several years consistently examined Kim Kang Yong’s artistic world from a philosophical perspective. This solo exhibition continues that curatorial trajectory while also being expected to reaffirm the presence of Korean contemporary art within the New York art scene. Curator Jinnie Kang commented, “The 2010s marked the peak of Kim Kang Yong’s artistic maturity. By reintroducing the works from this period in New York, where they were first created, we hoped to once again present the depth and possibilities of Korean contemporary art on the global stage.” The exhibition is held at Gallery Chang on 55th Street in Manhattan. The opening reception took place on Friday, October 3, and was a great success, attended by many figures from the art world and collectors. Meanwhile, at Gallery Chang Seoul, located in the Oakwood Hotel at COEX in Seoul, a two-person exhibition titled Infinite Dialogue featuring Kim Kang Yong and American West Coast contemporary master Shane Guffogg is currently on view and will run through November 15.
