- Chungbuk’s Future Lies Not in Seoul, but in the World: Exploring a “Global Strategy” in Cheongju | GALLERY CHANG
Back Chungbuk’s Future Lies Not in Seoul, but in the World: Exploring a “Global Strategy” in Cheongju A global vision connecting the local and the world was presented in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do. The message was clear: Chungbuk should no longer remain in a “second-place strategy” following Seoul, but instead leap directly onto the global stage. On the 22nd, a roundtable discussion was held at the headquarters of Bonjeong (本情), a specialty chocolate company in Cheongju. Participants included New York–based attorney Jang Jun-hwan, CEO of Gallery Chang; internationally renowned artist Shane Guffogg; and Lee Jong-tae, CEO of Bonjeong. What made the roundtable especially notable was that three private-sector figures—a Korean-American lawyer, an American artist, and a Chungbuk-based entrepreneur—came together to propose a global vision linking the region to the world. The discussion was organized following a “Culture–Technology Convergence” special lecture held earlier that day at Chungbuk National University, and explored the potential of a Chungbuk-style global strategy where culture, art, and regional branding converge. This gathering was not a simple corporate event or networking session, but a symbolic forum addressing Chungbuk’s urban future and industrial direction. All participants emphasized in unison: “Chungbuk’s next step is not Seoul, but the world.” Choosing Cheongju as the venue carried particular significance. Chungbuk sits at a transportation crossroads linking the administrative capital Sejong with the greater metropolitan area, while also hosting clusters of advanced industries such as bio, secondary batteries, and semiconductors. At the same time, it boasts rich natural and cultural assets—such as Songnisan National Park and Cheongnamdae—making it a compelling “testbed where industry and culture coexist.” Against this backdrop, the roundtable demonstrated how Chungbuk could evolve into a global hub city. Jang Jun-hwan cautioned that Chungbuk must not limit itself to expanding infrastructure and transportation networks. “Many regional cities function only as places tourists briefly visit and leave,” he said. “But to truly revitalize the economy, you must create a structure that encourages people to stay an extra day.” He proposed the concept of a “city to stay.” A key condition for this, he argued, is a vibrant nighttime economy. “A city lives when the night is alive,” Jang said, calling for programs for young people, family-friendly evening cultural events, and night markets reflecting local identity. “Even if trains and roads connect a region, without content that makes people stay, the local economy won’t grow.” Addressing young people, he added, “Success doesn’t come from one giant leap. It’s built through small successes accumulating over time. Build those achievements here in Chungbuk, then connect that confidence to the global stage.” Shane Guffogg offered a fresh, outsider’s perspective on Chungbuk. “The landscape I saw on the way to Cheongju reminded me of suburban New England or the countryside near New York,” he said. “Chungbuk, where nature and city coexist, has real appeal as a global testbed.” He was particularly impressed by Korea’s café culture. “Korean cafés are not just places to rest. Each one feels like an artwork, with its own design and concept. Even highway rest stops are full of creativity. This kind of cultural sensibility is a unique competitive strength Korea has that you don’t find elsewhere.” Speaking about his own work, Guffogg explained, “My paintings layer multiple dimensions of time onto a single canvas. This resembles the concept of superposition in quantum computing. Art and science may seem like different languages, but at their core, they ask the same questions.” He added, “I hope small cultural experiments that begin in Chungbuk will spread beyond Asia to the world,” and expressed his intention to continue engaging with Korea in the future. Lee Jong-tae, CEO of Bonjeong, centered the discussion on “regional branding.” “Cultural movements often begin not in megacities, but in small towns,” he said. “Just as French Impressionism emerged from rural villages, Chungbuk can also generate global currents.” He emphasized that brands should serve as mediators of cultural exchange, not just products for sale. “Bonjeong has created a first case in which a Chungbuk brand entered a global cultural platform through collaboration with a New York gallery,” he said. “We will continue participating in international projects to grow Bonjeong into a global brand.” Lee added, “Population may decline, but cultural and economic value can grow. When local companies join hands with culture, they can create new engines of growth. Bonjeong will stand as a cultural partner until the day Chungbuk gains global recognition.” Participants agreed that Chungbuk should not be content with merely catching up to Seoul, but should pursue strategies that connect it directly to the world. With global competitiveness already evident in bio-health, secondary batteries, and semiconductors—and expanding international exchange through Cheongju Airport—the addition of culture, art, and regional branding could propel Chungbuk beyond an industrial city into a global culture-and-technology hub. One local attendee remarked, “Today’s discussion gave confidence that Chungbuk can connect to the world not only through industry and economics, but through cultural imagination.” Though each speaker approached the future from a different angle—Jang Jun-hwan emphasizing a “city to stay,” Shane Guffogg advocating the “globalization of cultural creativity,” and Lee Jong-tae calling for the “global elevation of regional brands”—their direction was the same. The message of this roundtable extends beyond Chungbuk. Cities such as Brooklyn, Lyon, and Fukuoka have similarly transformed from “regional cities” into “global cities” by combining industrial strength with culture, art, and branding. Chungbuk, the speakers suggested, now stands at a similar threshold. cc.newdaily.co.kr < >
- Yuri Gorbachev Solo Exhibition ‘Museum Collection’(6/20-7/27) | GALLERY CHANG
Back Yuri Gorbachev Solo Exhibition ‘Museum Collection’(6/20-7/27) Gallery Chang is pleased to announce a solo exhibition featuring the work of the internationally renowned Russian-American artist, Yuri Gorbachev. Drawing inspiration from his childhood memory in Russia, the radiant jewel tones of Byzantine art, and the intricate craftsmanship of Peter Carl Faberge, a famous Russian goldsmith, Gorbachev creates vivid, richly textured paintings through the use of oil, gold, silver, and bronze. Gorbachev’s work, characterized by the application of specially formulated lacquer and glazing techniques, reflects his classical training and expertise in ceramics acquired in Russia. Gorbachev, born in the Soviet Union in 1948, established a successful career as a ceramicist specializing in sculpture in his home country. His native region of Novgorod(Но́вгород) produced one of the foremost schools of icon paintings, established by Andrei Rublyov, who was a disciple of the renowned Byzantine artist Feofan the greek. Gorbachev regards Rublyyov as a major influence on his art, alongside Picasso, Rousseau, Kandinsky, and Malevich. In 1991, upon arriving in the US, Gorbachev transitioned from ceramics to working with oil on canvas, making the beginning of the most prolific period of his career. Since then, Gorbachev has exhibited his work in nearly three hundred exhibitions worldwide. His works also have been widely collected by renowned international galleries and museums, including the Russian National Museum, the Louvre, the National Armenian Gallery, and the Clinton White House, among others. Gorbachev’s global appearances have enabled him to extensively travel, particularly in Asia. The inspiration he gained from his trips to Asia has profoundly shaped his art-making, leading him to leave the cultural influences froths journeys and childhood memories into his canvas. In 1995, Gorbachev went to Bali, and the profound impact of this previously unfamiliar culture led him to incorporate Indonesian motifs as a central element in his still-life series. For instance, flower hold significant importance in Balinese culture, being used in ceremonies for all life events, including brith, death, and everything in between. Gorbachev’s longing for his homeland also plays an important role in his art. In his landscapes series, Gorbachev channels this nostalgia into a vibrant kaleidoscope of Russian scenes. His works depict vivid visual imagery, including a racing troika and buildings reminiscent of Moscow’s iconic St. Basils’s Cathedral, against the backdrop of snowy, idyllic countryside. Sometimes Gorbachev blends a diverse array of visual tropes from still life and landscape series into one canvas, featuring wild animals, lush flora, and enigmatic figures carrying a symbol of the sun, moon, and star. His unique way of juxtaposing various cultural influences yields paintings that reinterpret both Asian and Russian myths, fairy tales, and landscapes, thereby opening up a realm of curiosity and imagination. Notably, Gorbachev’s art stands out for its ability to interweave diverse cultures and imagery, brought to life through vibrant colors, dynamic figures, and imagination. This exhibition presents a unique opportunity to explore the artistic worlds of four masters in contemporary Korean art: Cho Yong-Ik, Kim Sea Joong, Moon Insoo, and Oh Kwan Jin. According to Gallery Chang, Cho Yong Ik is recognized as a pioneer of monochrome painting in Korea, alongside Park Seo-bo, Yun Hyong Keun, Yun Myeung Ro, and Ha Chong Hyun. Through geometric elements and abstract forms, Cho Yong Ik conveys a distinctive aesthetic experience, contributing significantly to the development of Korean art history. Kim Sea Joong, acclaimed in the global art scene as a 'painter of light,' explores light, space, and time in his artworks. His works delve into spatial and temporal exploration, interpreting surfaces three-dimensionally and addressing the power of light and emotions. By combining painting and sculpture, Kim Sea Joong presents new perspectives, integrating the philosophical meanings of time and spatial senses to pursue 'invisible differentiation.' Gallery Chang's 'K-ART Chronicles' promises an enlightening encounter with the artistic achievements of these renowned Korean contemporary artists. Moon Insoo is a pioneer as a sculptor in "iron and concrete," broadening the spectrum of contemporary art. He was the first artist to win the Grand Prize in the sculpture category at the National Art Exhibition in 1986. His iconic sculpture "Red Bull" features a minimalist silhouette in a modernist style, and at this exhibition, he will showcase works including the "Red Bull" sculpture, paintings, special editions, and the "Multicolored Bull" sculpture. Oh Kwan Jin led the popularization of K-Art (Korean Art) as a painter, embodying the harmony of East and West in his works, notably represented by his Moon Jar series "Emptying and Filling." His artworks have been featured in three major Korean dramas and movies, contributing significantly to promoting Korean art globally. - Shin Ki Woun’s Works Presented in New York: Solo Exhibition, Illusion of Permanence | GALLERY CHANG
Back Shin Ki Woun’s Works Presented in New York: Solo Exhibition, Illusion of Permanence Artist Shin Ki Woun has developed a multidisciplinary practice encompassing video, installation, and performance, grounded in a background in sculpture and philosophy. His work is distinguished by its exploration of time and materiality as tools for dismantling structures of authority, symbolism, and memory, inviting viewers into a sensorial and reflective mode of thought. Based between Seoul and Daegu, Shin presents his first solo exhibition in the United States with Illusion of Permanence in New York. Gallery Chang New York opened Shin Ki Woun’s solo exhibition Illusion of Permanence on August 7. The exhibition brings together, for the first time in New York, a range of works—from Shin’s representative projects examining the erosion of time, matter, and power, to his latest works documenting the demolished interior of a former Chase Bank branch in Middletown, USA. The exhibition title, Illusion of Permanence , exposes the fiction and instability inherent in the concept of “permanence.” Over extended durations, Shin Ki Woun wears down materials or dismantles symbolic objects to reveal how emblems of authority and institutional power—things often believed to endure indefinitely, such as coins, clocks, chess pieces, and even the remnants of a demolished bank—can in fact be easily disintegrated and erased. On view are video works capturing the slow abrasion of a coin’s surface, installation works documenting the gradual erosion of metal sculptures, and experimental video pieces that physically and visually overturn the notion of “endurance” and continuity. Shin Ki Woun describes his practice in his artist’s note: “I use time as a tool to scrape the surface of power, reducing it to dust. Permanence is not a reality, but a structure of belief. By slowly wearing down symbolic objects—portraits of those in power, currency, and chess pieces that signify hierarchy and force—I reveal how easily they can disappear. This process is not merely destruction, but a ritualistic act that asks viewers to consider both the durability and fragility of belief itself. By juxtaposing the speed at which images vanish in the digital age with the illusion of material permanence attached to authority, I contemplate new forms of memory.”— Shin Ki Woun Shin Ki Woun’s solo exhibition Illusion of Permanence runs through August 12 (local time) at Gallery Chang New York. Founded in New York in 2019, Gallery Chang is a contemporary art gallery dedicated to presenting internationally influential artists while engaging with their artistic trajectories from a long-term perspective. In 2023, the gallery established its flagship space on West 55th Street in Manhattan, strategically located near major cultural institutions such as MoMA, Carnegie Hall, and New York City Center. Since then, Gallery Chang has expanded to additional spaces in Midtown New York (C2), Englewood, New Jersey (C3), and Seoul (C4), and now operates across four cities with active curatorial programs and community-based projects. www.ikoreanspirit.com 미국 뉴욕에서 선보이는 신기운 작가 작품, 개인전 《Illusion of Permanence(영속성의 환영)》 신기운 작가는 조각과 철학을 배경으로 영상, 설치, 퍼포먼스를 아우르는 다매체 작업을 전개해 왔다. 갤러리 장 뉴욕(Gallery CHANG, New York)은 신기운 작가 개인전 《Illusion of Permanence(영속성의 환영)》를 8월 7일 개막했다.
- Jimi Gleason’s First Solo Exhibition in Seoul Breaks the Boundaries of Perception Through Paintings of Light and Silence | GALLERY CHANG
Back Jimi Gleason’s First Solo Exhibition in Seoul Breaks the Boundaries of Perception Through Paintings of Light and Silence Abstract painting master Jimi Gleason is holding his first solo exhibition in Seoul. Titled Illuminated Silence , the exhibition runs from June 2 to June 28 at Gallery CHANG, located in the Oakwood Premier COEX Center in Samseong-dong, Seoul. This exhibition marks the final stop of the touring project Coast to Coast , which began in New York and Los Angeles before arriving in Seoul. It offers a rare opportunity for Korean audiences to encounter both representative works and new pieces by this internationally acclaimed artist. Jimi Gleason uses metallic pigments and specialized materials to create works that continuously change according to the viewer’s movement and the direction of light. His paintings capture the movement of light through “mirror-like responsive surfaces,” visually evoking a sense of quiet silence. The exhibition centers on his Ocean Series , which moves beyond visual abstraction to encourage deep sensory immersion. Viewers experience a subtle inner resonance simply by standing before the works—like the gentle swell one feels when dipping a foot into the sea. One visitor remarked, “It’s incredibly complex yet beautiful. Within that complexity lies the deep aesthetic unique to contemporary art.” The Seoul exhibition is held at Gallery CHANG, a contemporary art gallery headquartered on 55th Street in New York, which has now opened its fourth location in Seoul. The exhibition space features a double open-door structure and flexible circulation design, allowing visitors who use wheelchairs or mobility aids to comfortably engage with the artworks. The exhibition has been praised for embodying the idea of an inclusive art space accessible to all. The gallery stated, “This exhibition presents new possibilities for contemporary art at the intersection of materiality and immateriality, visuality and emotional resonance. We hope visitors will join us on a journey of sensory reflection through art.” www.koreadisablednews.com

- “Presenting the Possibility of Creating a Language for Future Society through the Convergence of Art and Science & Technology” | GALLERY CHANG
Back “Presenting the Possibility of Creating a Language for Future Society through the Convergence of Art and Science & Technology” Chungbuk National University (President Ko Chang-seop) hosted a special lecture on September 22 featuring renowned contemporary artist Shane Guffogg, titled From Einstein to AI: Art as a New Language , highlighting the potential of art to shape new modes of expression for future society. Organized by the university’s Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, the lecture took place in Room 105 of Building E9 and drew an audience of approximately 80 students and faculty members, underscoring strong interest in the convergence of art and science-based technologies. The event opened with welcoming remarks by Kim Bong-jae, Director of the AI Research Institute, followed by Guffogg’s lecture. In his talk, Guffogg focused on the intersections of AI, quantum technology, and art, presenting a range of examples to illustrate how art can generate new forms of social language. He emphasized that the layering of time, perception, and emotion can function as a new creative language within the convergence of art and advanced technologies, leaving a strong impression on attendees. A lively open discussion followed the lecture, during which participants exchanged ideas on how culture and technology, as well as art and science, can be harmoniously integrated. Many agreed that when future technologies such as AI and quantum computing meet artistic imagination, they have the potential to create new social values. Park Jungeun, Director of Gallery Chang, commented, “This lecture went beyond the appreciation of art and became a serious forum for reflecting on the fusion of art and technology. It offered Chungbuk National University students a meaningful opportunity to develop creative thinking within a global discourse.” Kim Bong-jae, Director of the AI Research Institute, noted, “Quantum computing should be regarded as a core technology shaping the future beyond computer science,” adding that its characteristic concept of ‘the superposition of time’ closely resonates with artistic imagination—an idea deeply connected to the themes Shane Guffogg has long explored through his art. The event ultimately demonstrated how integrative thinking that transcends the boundaries between art, science, and technology can play a crucial role in preparing for future society, reaffirming Chungbuk National University’s position as a platform for creative academic exchange. www.thecm.net "예술과 과학기술 융합 통한 미래 사회 언어 창출 가능성 제시" 충북대학교(총장 고창섭)가 22일 현대미술의 거장 셰인 구포그(Shane Guffogg)를 초청해 「From Einstein to AI: 예술이 만드는 새로운 언어」를 주제로 특별강연을 진행했다.
- BECOMING WITHOUT END: The Ever-Transforming Practice of Ed Moses | GALLERY CHANG
Back BECOMING WITHOUT END: The Ever-Transforming Practice of Ed Moses Gallery Chang in Midtown Manhattan is presenting the retrospective exhibition Ed Moses: Becoming Without End from August 14 through September 27. The exhibition introduces key works from Ed Moses (1926–2018), a leading figure of the postwar Los Angeles art scene, including representative pieces from his Acota , Magma , and Grid series. In the 1950s and 60s, Ed Moses was active in the art group known as the “Cool School,” alongside artists such as Craig Kauffman, Ed Ruscha, Robert Irwin, Larry Bell, Edward Kienholz, John Altoon, Ken Price, and Billy Al Bengston. Centered around the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, the Cool School developed an experimental and free visual language that stood apart from the New York–centered Abstract Expressionism of the time. For Moses, painting was a “laboratory,” and he continuously pursued change. Every six or seven years, he would shift his style—cutting and reconstructing canvases, or mixing materials such as resin, sand, and metal powder to create entirely new painterly surfaces. A representative work from the experimental Magma series, Ocnal (2002), shows intense energy, with lava-like red tones erupting from within black fissures. Check #2 (2003) introduces an orderly grid, yet disrupts it with irregular brushstrokes and colors, creating a surface where order and chaos coexist. In the late work Grid B (2017), Moses returns to the grid, but layered color planes seem to vibrate, giving the illusion that the painting itself is alive and breathing. Ed Moses was born in 1926 in Long Beach, California, and received his BFA and MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). From 1968, he taught at the University of California, Irvine, and in 1980 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. He participated in the Whitney Biennial in 1991, and in 1996 the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) held a major retrospective titled Ed Moses: A Retrospective of the Paintings and Drawings, 1951–1996 . His works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and others. His son, Andy Moses (b. 1962), is also a painter and earlier this year held a solo exhibition at Gallery Chang titled ANDY MOSES: RECENT WORKS . Curator Jinnie Kang of Gallery Chang stated that she organized this exhibition in the hope that “for New York audiences, this will not be merely a retrospective, but an opportunity to encounter Moses’s experimental spirit as it is newly reactivated each time.” https://www.nyculturebeat.com/index.php?mid=Lounge2&document_srl=4161812 < >
