South Korea, 1968 Artist Biography Works Next Kim Sea Joong South Korea, 1968 BIOGRAPHY Kim Sea Joong is a South Korean artist known for his innovative exploration of space, light, and color. Born in 1968, Kim studied fine arts at the prestigious Paris 8 University in France, where he completed both his bachelor's and master's degrees in plastic arts. His artistic practice blends sculptural methodologies with painterly techniques, creating works that challenge conventional perceptions of depth and light on a canvas. Central to Kim’s philosophy is his belief that “color is another interpretation of space.” His works often focus on the interplay between darkness and light, using monochromatic surfaces to evoke a profound sense of spatial depth. This approach represents his quest for “a new understanding of spatial perception through pure color.” One of his signature materials is International Klein Blue (IKB), a vibrant blue pigment that Kim sourced directly from France. For Kim, this blue transcends its secondary associations, offering a direct engagement with the visual essence of color itself. Kim’s practice has been celebrated for its ability to twist and manipulate space visually, creating an almost tactile presence of light within his canvases. His works are a meditation on how simplicity in color and form can evoke complex emotional and spatial experiences. Since his debut solo exhibition at Galerie Elephant Blanc in Paris in 1999, Kim has held numerous solo exhibitions in prominent galleries, including Galerie Cité des Arts and Galerie Tristan Bernard in Paris, as well as Gallery EM, Gong Art Space, Gallery BK, Gallery Purple, and 2tti Space in Seoul. He has also participated in a wide array of group exhibitions, establishing himself as a significant figure in both the Korean and international art scenes. Currently living and working in Korea, Kim Sea Joong continues to push the boundaries of monochromatic abstraction, using his work to invite viewers into an immersive exploration of light, space, and the visual purity of color. His dedication to refining the relationship between materiality and perception ensures that his art resonates with both intellectual rigor and emotional depth. United States, 1962 Artist Biography Works Next Andy Moses United States, 1962 BIOGRAPHY Andy Moses is a celebrated contemporary artist known for his luminous, abstract works that blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Born in Los Angeles in 1962, Moses grew up surrounded by the vibrant culture and light-filled landscapes of Southern California, which continue to influence his work. He studied at the renowned California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he was mentored by influential artists like John Baldessari and Michael Asher. These formative years sparked his fascination with the intersection of physicality, perception, and the metaphysical dimensions of art. Moses’ work is defined by its exploration of light, color, and form, often utilizing unconventional techniques and materials. His intricate process involves manipulating paints mixed with metallic pigments and industrial coatings, applied to curved or shaped panels. The resulting surfaces are dynamic, shifting with the viewer’s perspective and the surrounding light. These works invite an immersive experience, creating a dialogue between the observer, the artwork, and the environment. After moving to New York in 1982, Moses became part of the city’s burgeoning art scene, developing ties with artists like Jeff Koons and Jean-Michel Basquiat. During this time, his work reflected a fascination with geological forces and the macro/micro dynamics of nature. In 2000, Moses returned to Los Angeles, where the unique coastal light and vast landscapes inspired a shift in his practice. Incorporating elements of the Light and Space movement, he began experimenting with reflective surfaces and concave panels that expand the viewer’s perception of space and time. Moses has exhibited internationally for over three decades, with his work featured in major institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum, and the Orange County Museum of Art. His paintings are included in prestigious public and private collections worldwide, earning him a reputation as one of Southern California’s leading abstract artists. Living and working in Venice, California, Moses continues to push the limits of abstraction, crafting works that resonate with the ever-changing dynamics of light and perception. His art serves as a bridge between the material and the intangible, inviting viewers to explore the profound beauty of the natural and the metaphysical world. - Ed Moses
United States, 1926-2018 Artist Biography Works Next Ed Moses United States, 1926-2018 BIOGRAPHY Ed Moses was a trailblazer in the Los Angeles art scene, earning global recognition for his dynamic, ever-evolving approach to painting. Throughout his prolific career spanning seven decades, Moses continually challenged artistic boundaries, describing himself as a “mutator” who thrived on curiosity and discovery. For him, painting was a dialogue between structure and freedom, where control met the desire to transcend limitations. Born on April 9, 1926, in Long Beach, California, Moses began his journey in a different field. After serving as a surgical technician in World War II, he initially pursued a career in medicine but found his passion for art through a serendipitous class at Long Beach City College. This pivotal moment led him to UCLA’s MFA program, where he connected with influential figures like Craig Kauffman and Walter Hopps, founder of the Ferus Gallery. In 1958, Moses debuted at Ferus Gallery, becoming a core member of the “Cool School,” a collective of groundbreaking artists including Robert Irwin, Ed Ruscha, and Ken Price. Together, they reshaped postwar art in Los Angeles, creating a foundation for the city’s thriving contemporary art scene. Moses' work was deeply rooted in experimentation and transformation. A committed Buddhist practitioner from 1978, he embraced impermanence and chance in his creative process, focusing on presence and intuition over rigid technique. He eschewed the label “artist,” instead calling himself a “mark maker” who sought to explore the endless possibilities of the painted surface. Over the years, Moses’ contributions to contemporary art were celebrated through numerous exhibitions and retrospectives. Highlights include his 1996 retrospective at MOCA Los Angeles and landmark shows at LACMA and UCLA’s Wight Gallery. His work transitioned from early drawings to bold, abstract paintings, with his later pieces showcasing his mastery of scale, color, and texture. Even in his 90s, Moses remained a vital force in the art world, working daily in his Venice studio and inspiring generations of artists. His legacy endures as a testament to his unwavering commitment to reinvention, exploration, and the power of art to transcend time and boundaries. - Jimi Gleason
United States, 1961 Artist Biography Works Next Jimi Gleason United States, 1961 BIOGRAPHY Jimi Gleason is a contemporary artist whose work explores the dynamic interplay between light, material, and perception. Born in Newport Beach, California, Gleason studied fine arts at UC Berkeley, graduating in 1985. His artistic journey began with studies in printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute and work as a photo assistant in New York City. Upon returning to California, he spent five years working in the studio of renowned artist Ed Moses, an experience that profoundly shaped his understanding of abstraction and materiality. Gleason’s paintings are celebrated for their luminous, reflective surfaces created through a meticulous and labor-intensive process. His primary medium, silver nitrate, is applied using techniques inspired by industrial processes. This approach connects his work to the legacy of the West Coast Minimalist and Light & Space movements, which explored the intersection of art, technology, and perception. The result is a body of work that transcends the boundaries of traditional painting, engaging viewers in an immersive, ever-changing experience. The reflective surfaces of Gleason’s works are activated by light and the viewer’s presence, creating a dynamic interaction that is central to his artistic vision. His paintings echo the alchemical principles of transformation, offering a meditative space where materiality and the ephemeral coexist. Gleason’s work invites viewers to explore themes of duality and connection, where the boundaries between the physical and metaphysical dissolve. Over his career, Gleason has exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Hammer Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Tucson Museum of Art. His work is included in significant public and private collections worldwide, earning him recognition for his innovative approach and technical mastery. Living and working in Southern California, Gleason continues to push the limits of abstraction and material exploration, creating works that challenge traditional notions of painting while offering a profound and contemplative experience for the viewer. - Choi WoolGa
South Korea Artist Biography Works Next Choi WoolGa South Korea BIOGRAPHY Choi Woolga is a painter trained in Western painting. He completed his studies at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts de Versailles. Born in Ulsan in 1956 and raised in Busan, Choi grew up as the youngest of four children in a family with a background in the Enlightenment movement, under a father who worked as an interpreter. Rather than focusing on academic studies, he spent his youth immersed in literature and music, often staying up through the night, and was considered a rebellious figure within his household. In his late twenties during the 1980s, he moved to Paris, where he first encountered and fully embraced the world of art, beginning his path as a painter. After spending fifteen years working in Paris, he relocated to New York in 2000, in his mid-forties. It was there that he developed his now-recognized “Black and White” series, which brought him critical attention. His paintings are characterized by the spontaneous appearance of symbols and text, along with a restrained use of monochromatic fields and linear expression that resist layering or overlap. These elements reflect a deeply internalized sensibility rooted in his early engagement with literature, translating narrative impulses into visual form. Since his first solo exhibition, Choi has published eight monographs and has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Korea, New York, Paris, and Japan. WORKS Load More
