Born in Los Angeles in 1962, Moses grew up surrounded by the vibrant culture and light-filled landscapes of Southern California, which continue to influence his work. He studied at the renowned California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he was mentored by influential artists like John Baldessari and Michael Asher. These formative years sparked his fascination with the intersection of physicality, perception, and the metaphysical dimensions of art. Moses’ work is defined by its exploration of light, color, and form, often utilizing unconventional techniques and materials. His intricate process involves manipulating paints mixed with metallic pigments and industrial coatings, applied to curved or shaped panels. The resulting surfaces are dynamic, shifting with the viewer’s perspective and the surrounding light. This exhibition brings together two distinct yet resonant approaches—Kim’s contemplative inquiry into the poetics of the interstice, shaped within the intellectual solitude of Paris, and Gleason’s translation of California’s radiant energy into reflective, dynamic surfaces. Kim Sejoong’s work draws light inward. His practice reveals the quiet depth of light as it settles into layers, inhabiting space through accumulation, shadow, and stillness. His surfaces are not merely visual fields, but meditative structures where time and material converge. In contrast, Jimi Gleason’s work projects light outward. Through silver coatings and specialized pigments, his surfaces reflect and refract their surroundings, activating the space beyond the canvas. Light becomes an event—expanding, shifting, and engaging directly with the viewer’s presence. At the intersection of stillness and movement, contemplation and sensation, Resonating Light: Interstice and Surface presents a spectrum of perceptual experience. Back Gallery Chang Presents Time-Shift Exhibition in an Abandoned Building Gallery Chang is presenting a time-shift curatorial exhibition titled CHASE Project: Phase Shift , using an abandoned building as its exhibition site. Originally conceived at the multidisciplinary cultural space “The Bank” in Middletown, Upstate New York, the project has been expanded and re-presented as a new version at Gallery Chang in Manhattan. Three artists—Shin Kiwoun, Kim Hong Bin, and Anon—are participating. The exhibition first presents works by Kim Hong Bin and Anon through August 5, followed by Shin Ki Woun’s solo presentation Illusion of Permanence through August 12. Shin also participated in the restoration project of Nam June Paik’s The More the Better at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. Video artist Shin Ki woun explores the meanings of “existence” and “non-existence” through images that inhabit a worldview of “generation” and “disappearance,” adopting and experimenting with technical methods that push beyond the boundaries of art. Gallery Chang explains that Shin revives images of memories that were once real but soon vanished—becoming ambiguous and lost—by using time-lapse filming to reconstruct them as psychological spaces within memory. Textile artist An On has developed her own visual language through flat works, reliefs, and installations using textiles as her primary medium. By tearing, layering, and stitching fabrics that she has printed herself, she creates surfaces that are both painterly and sculptural. Gallery Chang notes that An’s textile collages contain narratives of color and layers of sensation within meticulous structures. They visualize natural temporality, personal emotions, and fragments of memory through the materiality of fabric. Repeated cutting, reassembling, and sewing leave traces of contemplation, while restrained vertical and horizontal compositions maintain a steady rhythm, and colors evoke sensations of season, light, and emotion. Artist Kim Hong Bin, who works under the name “VANHADA,” expresses themes such as “the beauty one seeks” and “the challenge of something new.” According to Gallery Chang, Kim reflects the “anxiety of an unsettled life” in his works, exaggerating colors to express how he absorbs and even enjoys stimuli and stress from his environment. Working mainly with acrylic on flat surfaces, he uses paint like stickers and creates various forms by crumpling, tearing, and reconfiguring his materials. Back Kim Kang Yong: “These Days, Even When I Paint with a Brush, People Still Call It Bricks” Exhibition of Hyperrealist Works from the 2010s, When Color Was Added to Monotone “I can’t force the meaning of a work onto the viewer. If people can imagine many things when they look at a painting, that alone makes it a good painting.” Kim Kang Yong, who is currently holding the exhibition Reality + Image: The 2010s at Gallery Chang in Manhattan, New York, said this in an interview with The Korea Economic Daily on the 10th. The exhibition, which runs through the 22nd, focuses on his works from the 2010s. Kim is widely known as the “brick painter.” He creates his works using a technique in which he sifts sand he has collected himself, mixes it with adhesive, and spreads it thinly over the canvas. At one point, his paintings were so hyperrealistic that they looked as if real bricks had been embedded into the wall. In his own words, these days he simply adds shading with a brush to repeatedly depict cubic forms, yet people still see them as bricks. “Even though I no longer paint bricks, people still interpret them as bricks,” he said. “But I don’t bother denying that interpretation.” He added that if people can imagine many things when they see his paintings, that alone is enough for him. “I don’t really care who evaluates my work—whether it’s a journalist or a viewer,” Kim said. “Sometimes, through their interpretations, I even learn things about my inner self and my paintings that I didn’t know.” His philosophy is to remain faithful to visual images in painting and leave all other interpretations to each individual. Kim first began painting bricks in 1976. While searching for his own subject matter and technique in order to debut as an artist, he eventually settled on bricks. He drew inspiration from construction sites, sand, and bricks that were everywhere during the era of industrialization. He worked with affection for each grain of sand. To him, sand symbolized human beings—each born with their own value. After abstract painters such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko reached their peak in the 1940s and 1950s, hyperrealism emerged in the 1970s as a reaction. The art world, considering the direction of painting after abstraction, chose a “return to reality.” Kim’s work followed this larger flow. Around this time, he introduced transition into his work. Whereas his earlier paintings were monotone, he began adding soft colors. This was influenced by his fascination with the diversity of New York. “There was no single identical building, no single identical person,” he said. “I wanted to express that feeling in my paintings as well.” Even as he introduced these changes, his works overall retain a warm image. Even when he expresses shadows, they strongly evoke the feeling of natural sunlight. This differs from the colder atmosphere of much contemporary hyperrealism, which often conveys modern urban chill, human absence, or loneliness. “I myself am a positive and optimistic person,” Kim said. “I can’t help but let my inner self show through in my paintings.” Kim said he hopes to continue his international activities through opportunities like this exhibition. “Most artists my age have retired, but I still want to paint,” he said. “I still have the desire to surpass my teachers.” Gallery Chang has been consecutively presenting Kim’s works since February of last year to help audiences better understand the full scope of his practice. Drawing inspiration from his childhood memory in Russia, the radiant jewel tones of Byzantine art, and the intricate craftsmanship of Peter Carl Fabergé, a famous Russian goldsmith, Gorbachev creates vivid, richly textured paintings through the use of oil, gold, silver, and bronze. Gorbachev’s work, characterized by the application of specially formulated lacquer and glazing techniques, reflects his classical training and expertise in ceramics acquired in Russia. Gorbachev, born in the Soviet Union in 1948, established a successful career as a ceramicist specializing in sculpture in his home country. His native region of Novgorod (Новгород) produced one of the foremost schools of icon paintings, established by Andrei Rublyov, who was a disciple of the renowned Byzantine artist Feofan the Greek. Gorbachev regards Rublyov as a major influence on his art, alongside Picasso, Rousseau, Kandinsky, and Malevich. In 1991, upon arriving in the US, Gorbachev transitioned from ceramics to working with oil on canvas, making the beginning of the most prolific period of his career. Since then, Gorbachev has exhibited his work in nearly three hundred exhibitions worldwide. His works also have been widely collected by renowned international galleries and museums, including the Russian National Museum, the Louvre, the National Armenian Gallery, and the Clinton White House, among others. Gorbachev's global appearances have enabled him to extensively travel, particularly in Asia. The inspiration he gained from his trips to Asia has profoundly shaped his art-making, leading him to weave the cultural influences from his journeys and childhood memories into his canvas. In 1995, Gorbachev went to Bali, and the profound impact of this previously unfamiliar culture led him to incorporate Indonesian motifs, such as floral patterns, as a central element in his still-life series. Gorbachev’s longing for his homeland also plays an important role in his art. In his landscapes series, Gorbachev channels this nostalgia into a vibrant kaleidoscope of Russian scenes. His works depict vivid visual imagery, including a racing troika (a type of Russian carriage) and buildings reminiscent of Moscow’s iconic St Basil’s Cathedral, against the backdrop of snowy, idyllic countryside. Sometimes Gorbachev blends a diverse array of visual tropes from still life and landscape series into one canvas, featuring wild animals, lush flora, and enigmatic figures carrying a symbol of the sun, moon, and star. His unique way of juxtaposing various cultural influences yields paintings that reinterpret both Asian and Russian myths, fairy tales, and landscapes, thereby opening up a realm of curiosity and imagination.
