South Korea Artist Biography Works Next Ahn Seongmin South Korea BIOGRAPHY Seongmin Ahn is a Korean-American artist celebrated for her innovative reinterpretations of minhwa , the traditional Korean folk painting style. Based in New York, Ahn bridges the boundaries between tradition and modernity, Eastern and Western art, creating works that are both deeply rooted in cultural heritage and profoundly contemporary in their execution. Ahn’s work blends traditional minhwa motifs, such as peonies, waterfalls, and mythical animals, with elements of Western culture and modern life. This dynamic juxtaposition breathes new life into traditional Korean art forms, presenting a fresh dialogue between past and present. Her unique ability to reimagine minhwa through a contemporary lens has established her as a significant figure in both Korean and international art. Her contributions were highlighted in the 2020 Asia Week New York exhibition MINHWA & minhwa: Korean Folk Paintings in Dialogue With the Contemporary , hosted by the Korean Cultural Center New York. This exhibition juxtaposed historical minhwa pieces from the 19th and early 20th centuries with Ahn’s innovative works, showcasing how the tradition has evolved into a modern art form. Her reinterpretations explore themes of cultural identity and transformation, often pairing traditional minhwa imagery with objects and ideas drawn from Western culture and modern daily life. Ahn’s educational background reflects her deep engagement with traditional and contemporary art. After earning her BFA and MFA in Oriental Painting from Seoul National University, she completed a second MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art in the United States. Her dual training allows her to merge the technical precision of traditional Korean painting with the conceptual frameworks of contemporary art. She has exhibited extensively in both Korea and the United States, holding solo exhibitions at venues such as the Delaware Contemporary Art Center (Wilmington, Delaware), Queens College Art Center (Flushing, New York), and Stony Brook University’s Charles B. Wang Center (Stony Brook, New York). Ahn is also a recipient of prestigious awards, including the Jackson Pollock-Lee Krasner Foundation Grant and the Al Foundation’s Visual Arts Competition Grand Prize. In addition to her artistic practice, Ahn has been a dedicated educator, teaching traditional Korean painting and contemporary art at renowned institutions such as the Art Students League of New York, School of Visual Arts, Queens Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Asia Society. Her work has also been featured in prominent media outlets, including The Washington Post . Through her vibrant and thought-provoking works, Seongmin Ahn continues to redefine minhwa for a global audience, celebrating its timeless beauty while exploring its relevance in the contemporary world. United States, 1971 Artist Biography Works Next Mark Acetelli United States, 1971 BIOGRAPHY Mark Acetelli is an American painter celebrated for his evocative abstract works that explore the complexities of human emotions and experiences. Born in Detroit and influenced by his artist mother, Acetelli was introduced to art at an early age. His creative path spans multiple disciplines, including music, photography, and painting, all of which inform his richly textured and emotionally resonant style. Acetelli’s paintings delve into themes of love, loss, transformation, and the human condition. He uses oil paint and encaustic techniques to create deeply layered surfaces, applying and removing materials in a meticulous process. Brushes, palette knives, cloth, and even his hands are tools in crafting these textured works, which invite viewers to engage emotionally rather than focus on defined imagery. His aim is to evoke feelings and introspection, allowing each viewer to connect personally with his art. Acetelli’s work is widely collected, with pieces featured in private and corporate collections worldwide. In 2023, he held the acclaimed solo exhibition Surface of a Dream at Artplex Gallery in Los Angeles. In 2024, he showcased his work at Wonzimer Gallery, further solidifying his reputation as a leading voice in contemporary abstraction. As of 2025, Acetelli continues to push the boundaries of abstract painting, creating new works that merge material and spiritual realms. His art resonates with audiences globally, offering a profound exploration of the human spirit through texture, color, and emotion. • Alison Van Pelt

United States Artist Biography Works Next Alison Van Pelt United States BIOGRAPHY Alison Van Pelt is an acclaimed contemporary painter known for her evocative, dreamlike portraits that blend elements of abstraction and realism. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Van Pelt studied at prestigious institutions including UCLA, Art Center College of Design, Otis College of Art and Design, and the Florence Academy of Art. Her diverse education and fascination with the human form and art history have shaped her distinctive approach to painting. Van Pelt’s work is characterized by its ethereal quality, achieved through a meticulous process of layering paint and then blurring or obscuring the image. Faces and figures emerge and dissolve across the surface, evoking the passage of time and the ephemeral nature of memory. Her portraits, often referencing iconic figures or personal subjects, invite viewers into a meditative exploration of identity, perception, and transformation. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of artistic traditions, including Renaissance portraiture and contemporary abstraction, Van Pelt’s paintings transcend specific styles or movements. The delicate balance of structure and ambiguity in her work creates a powerful visual and emotional impact, leaving a lasting impression on viewers. Van Pelt has exhibited her work widely in galleries and museums, including the Santa Monica Museum of Art, the Pasadena Museum of California Art, and the Laguna Art Museum. Her paintings are part of esteemed private and public collections, earning her a reputation as a masterful artist whose work resonates deeply with audiences around the world. Living and working in Los Angeles, Van Pelt continues to explore the boundaries of portraiture, creating works that are as much about what is hidden as what is revealed. • Oh Kwan Jin

South Korea, 1963 Artist Biography Works Next Oh Kwan Jin South Korea, 1963 BIOGRAPHY Oh Kwan Jin is a distinguished South Korean artist renowned for his contemporary reinterpretations of traditional Korean ceramics, particularly the iconic Moon Jar (dalhangari ). His work seamlessly blends Eastern and Western artistic techniques, creating a unique visual language that resonates with a global audience. Born in South Korea, Oh Kwan Jin pursued his passion for art from a young age. He developed a distinctive style that combines the chiaroscuro of Western painting with the aerial perspective characteristic of Eastern art. This fusion results in compositions that are both meditative and dynamic, inviting viewers to explore the depth and subtlety of his subjects. A central theme in Oh's work is the Moon Jar, a traditional Korean porcelain vessel known for its simple yet elegant form. He reimagines these vessels on flat surfaces, employing mixed media to capture their essence while infusing them with contemporary sensibilities. His series "Emptying and Filling" exemplifies this approach, reflecting on concepts of emptiness and fullness, both physically and metaphorically. Oh Kwan Jin's innovative approach has been showcased in numerous exhibitions. Notably, his works were featured in "The Contemporary Moon Jar" exhibition by Salon 94 Design, which explored the legacy of the Moon Jar as reimagined by contemporary Korean and Korean-American artists. His art has also been prominently displayed in various galleries, including Gallery Chang in New York. The exhibition "Emptying to Enrichment: Moon Jars Path" featured over a dozen of his pieces, highlighting his unique ability to reinterpret traditional forms through a modern lens. Through his thoughtful and innovative works, Oh Kwan Jin continues to contribute significantly to the discourse on cultural identity and artistic expression, bridging the past and present in Korean art. • Michael Hedges

United States, 1976 Artist Biography Works Next Michael Hedges United States, 1976 BIOGRAPHY Michael Hedges is an American abstract expressionist painter whose dynamic works are celebrated for their vibrant interplay of color, form, and texture. Based in Chicago, Illinois, Hedges has dedicated his career to pushing the boundaries of abstract expressionism, creating compositions that balance energy and elegance. Born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois, Hedges began his formal art education during high school, spending two years studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. He later pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, graduating in 1998. This foundation in both classical and modern art traditions informed his distinctive approach to abstraction. Hedges’ artistic process is deeply intuitive and experimental. Working on multiple canvases simultaneously, he applies paint in energetic bursts, building richly textured surfaces that draw the viewer into their complexity. His use of bold, vibrant colors is both deliberate and instinctive, creating intense visual relationships that harmonize with the textured forms. His goal is to craft a controlled elegance where color and texture coexist in dynamic balance, producing works that are as emotionally resonant as they are visually striking. Since his graduation, Hedges has exhibited his work in select galleries and prestigious venues such as Art Miami. His paintings are included in corporate collections throughout the Chicagoland area and Iowa, reflecting his growing influence in the contemporary art world. Currently living and working near Chicago, Michael Hedges remains committed to his artistic practice. His dedication to exploring the limitless possibilities of abstract expressionism ensures that his work continues to evolve, resonating with audiences who appreciate its vibrancy and depth. WORKS

South Korea, 1954 Artist Biography Works Next Choi Sungho South Korea, 1954 BIOGRAPHY Sung Ho Choi is a Korean American mixed media artist whose work delves into themes of cultural identity, immigration, and the Asian American experience. Born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1954, Choi completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Hongik University in 1980. He moved to the United States in 1981 and earned his Master of Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute in 1984. Since then, he has been living and working in New York City and Bergen County, New Jersey. Choi's art is characterized by a fusion of painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed media, reflecting his bicultural experiences. His works often incorporate everyday materials and found objects, creating visual narratives that explore the contrasts and complexities of being a minority within a majority culture. Notable projects include "American Dream" (1988-1992), where he used ballpoint pen on lottery tickets pasted on wood panel to comment on the elusive nature of the American dream for immigrants. In 1990, Choi founded the SEORO Korean Cultural Network, a collective aimed at promoting Korean American artists. His work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at institutions such as the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Queens Museum of Art, and the Kumho Museum of Art. In 1996, he was commissioned by Percent for Art to create an installation work, further cementing his role in the public art sphere. One of his significant public artworks is "Quiltroad" (1999), a 17-foot-wide acrylic on canvas painting located in the U.S. Courthouse in Seattle, Washington. This piece reflects his interest in the journey of immigrants and the patchwork of cultures that constitute American society. Through his multifaceted works, Sung Ho Choi offers profound insights into the immigrant experience, identity, and the blending of cultures, making significant contributions to contemporary art and the discourse on cultural integration. • Cho Yong Ik

South Korea, 1934-2023 Artist Biography Works Next Cho Yong Ik South Korea, 1934-2023 BIOGRAPHY Cho Yong-Ik was a prominent South Korean artist and a pioneering figure in the Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) movement. Born on February 20, 1934, in Bukcheong, Korea, he pursued his education at Seoul National University in the mid-1960s, studying under the esteemed art historian, critic, and painter Kim Byung-ki. This mentorship instilled in him the importance of maintaining artistic independence, a principle that became central to his practice. Throughout his seven-decade-long career, Cho developed a distinctive approach within the Dansaekhwa movement. While his contemporaries often focused on monochromatic palettes, Cho's work stood out for its incorporation of color and dynamic compositions. His paintings are characterized by energetic abstractions featuring lyrical scratches, whisks, and flicks, emphasizing process, materiality, and systematic organization. This unique style allowed him to push the boundaries of Korean abstract art. Cho's contributions to art were recognized both nationally and internationally. He participated in significant exhibitions such as the Paris Biennale in 1961 and 1969, and the São Paulo Bienal in 1967. His works have been showcased in esteemed institutions, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul and Gwacheon, the Leeum Museum of Art, and the Fukuoka Museum of Art in Japan. In 2016, he held a major solo exhibition at the Sungkok Art Museum in Seoul, further cementing his legacy in the art world. Beyond his artistic practice, Cho was dedicated to education and the advancement of the Korean art community. He served as a professor at Chugye University for the Arts from 1974 to 1992 and held the position of vice executive director of the Korean Fine Arts Association between 1977 and 1983. Cho Yong-Ik passed away on July 2, 2023, at the age of 89. His legacy endures through his innovative contributions to Korean abstract art and his influence on subsequent generations of artists.
