United States, 1961 Artist Biography Works Next Jimi Gleason United States, 1961 BIOGRAPHY Jimi Gleason is a contemporary artist whose work explores the dynamic interplay between light, material, and perception. Born in Newport Beach, California, Gleason studied fine arts at UC Berkeley, graduating in 1985. His artistic journey began with studies in printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute and work as a photo assistant in New York City. Upon returning to California, he spent five years working in the studio of renowned artist Ed Moses, an experience that profoundly shaped his understanding of abstraction and materiality. Gleason’s paintings are celebrated for their luminous, reflective surfaces created through a meticulous and labor-intensive process. His primary medium, silver nitrate, is applied using techniques inspired by industrial processes. This approach connects his work to the legacy of the West Coast Minimalist and Light & Space movements, which explored the intersection of art, technology, and perception. The result is a body of work that transcends the boundaries of traditional painting, engaging viewers in an immersive, ever-changing experience. The reflective surfaces of Gleason’s works are activated by light and the viewer’s presence, creating a dynamic interaction that is central to his artistic vision. His paintings echo the alchemical principles of transformation, offering a meditative space where materiality and the ephemeral coexist. Gleason’s work invites viewers to explore themes of duality and connection, where the boundaries between the physical and metaphysical dissolve. Over his career, Gleason has exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Hammer Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Tucson Museum of Art. His work is included in significant public and private collections worldwide, earning him recognition for his innovative approach and technical mastery. Living and working in Southern California, Gleason continues to push the limits of abstraction and material exploration, creating works that challenge traditional notions of painting while offering a profound and contemplative experience for the viewer. United States, 1962 Artist Biography Works Next Andy Moses United States, 1962 BIOGRAPHY Andy Moses is a celebrated contemporary artist known for his luminous, abstract works that blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Born in Los Angeles in 1962, Moses grew up surrounded by the vibrant culture and light-filled landscapes of Southern California, which continue to influence his work. He studied at the renowned California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he was mentored by influential artists like John Baldessari and Michael Asher. These formative years sparked his fascination with the intersection of physicality, perception, and the metaphysical dimensions of art. Moses’ work is defined by its exploration of light, color, and form, often utilizing unconventional techniques and materials. His intricate process involves manipulating paints mixed with metallic pigments and industrial coatings, applied to curved or shaped panels. The resulting surfaces are dynamic, shifting with the viewer’s perspective and the surrounding light. These works invite an immersive experience, creating a dialogue between the observer, the artwork, and the environment. After moving to New York in 1982, Moses became part of the city’s burgeoning art scene, developing ties with artists like Jeff Koons and Jean-Michel Basquiat. During this time, his work reflected a fascination with geological forces and the macro/micro dynamics of nature. In 2000, Moses returned to Los Angeles, where the unique coastal light and vast landscapes inspired a shift in his practice. Incorporating elements of the Light and Space movement, he began experimenting with reflective surfaces and concave panels that expand the viewer’s perception of space and time. Moses has exhibited internationally for over three decades, with his work featured in major institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum, and the Orange County Museum of Art. His paintings are included in prestigious public and private collections worldwide, earning him a reputation as one of Southern California’s leading abstract artists. Living and working in Venice, California, Moses continues to push the limits of abstraction, crafting works that resonate with the ever-changing dynamics of light and perception. His art serves as a bridge between the material and the intangible, inviting viewers to explore the profound beauty of the natural and the metaphysical world. - The Mark of Time: Tracing the Origins of Eastern and Western Abstraction | GALLERY CHANG
Back The Mark of Time: Tracing the Origins of Eastern and Western Abstraction Gallery Chang in Midtown Manhattan presents the four-artist exhibition The Mark of Time from January 8 to February 17, 2026. Bringing together works by Korean and American artists Cho Yong Ik, Kim Kang Yong, Ed Moses, and Jimi Gleason, the exhibition examines the origins of Eastern and Western abstraction through the shared lens of time as a mode of thought. The Mark of Time does not approach abstraction as a singular style or a linear outcome of art history. Instead, it considers abstraction as a way of thinking that emerged simultaneously across different cultural contexts. The exhibition traces how artists working within distinct environments and traditions have shared fundamental questions of time, material, and action. Here, abstraction is understood not as a finished form, but as a process through which experience accumulates and is recorded. What appears on the canvas is less a completed image than the residue of time—repeated gestures, countless decisions, and moments of choice and withdrawal layered over duration. The exhibition is structured around two interconnected dialogues. The first dialogue brings together the works of Ed Moses and Cho Yong Ik, viewing abstraction as a trace of time. For Moses, painting is not a means of representation but an event shaped by action and decision. His canvases bear not only visible brushstrokes, but also erased movements, hesitation, and the temporal span of the painting’s making. Cho Yong-Ik’s work is likewise formed through repetition, restraint, and a meditative rigor. Rather than completing an image in a single gesture, he gradually builds density through sustained and deliberate actions, allowing abstraction to function as a vessel for the experience of time. The second dialogue connects the practices of Kim Kang Yong and Jimi Gleason, expanding abstraction into a materially constructed world. Kim’s brick paintings are the result of labor, weight, and time meticulously layered onto the canvas. While they evoke physical structures, they operate less as representations than as painterly inquiries into material, structure, and illusion. Gleason similarly constructs his surfaces through repetitive gestures and layered silvery pigments, allowing resistance, reflection, and material tension to shape form. Curator Jinnie Kang explains, “Rather than deeply comparing or opposing East and West, The Mark of Time seeks to show how different modes of abstract thinking, formed within distinct contexts, can converge into a single flow. By viewing abstraction not through cultural divisions but through attitudes toward time, action, and material, the exhibition highlights moments where the artists’ works intersect and resonate naturally within parallel relationships.” https://www.nyculturebeat.com/index.php?document_srl=4174429&mid=Lounge2 < >

Apr 20 - May 24, 2025 Intro Catalog Installation Views Next [C4] Seoul Where Past and Future are Gathered Apr 20 - May 24, 2025 Shane Guffogg INTRO SHANE GUFFOGG: WHERE PAST AND FUTURE ARE GATHERED GALLERY CHANG, SOEUL, SOUTH KOREA Gallery Chang in Seoul, South Korea, presents Shane Guffogg: “Where Past and Future are Gathered” a solo exhibition featuring Guffogg’s Still Point paintings, a body of work deeply engaged with themes of time, transcendence, and the ephemeral nature of existence. While this marks the artist’s first exhibition in South Korea, the fundamental principles of his work—his balance of time, space, and form—are inherently aligned with the aesthetics of Korean art. Guffogg’s paintings serve as confessions of time, transforming unseen forces into tangible marks. His brushstrokes trace energies that mysteriously move into our world, capturing the presence in layers of light and movement. The viewer, as a receiver, is invited to witness these ephemeral forces through an immediate sensory (visual) experience. A key inspiration for Guffogg’s Still Point series is T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets – a meditation on time, impermanence, and spiritual awakening. Each painting draws its title from stanzas of this poem, where the passage of time is examined through the elements—air, earth, water, and fire. Guffogg’s work does not illustrate Eliot’s poetry but rather embodies a visual language akin to calligraphy, where color and movement become expressive gestures of form and emotion. Through thousands of layered brushstrokes, his compositions unfold like wordless poems. The exhibition’s largest painting, “At the Still Point of the Turning World – The Surface Glittered out of the Heart of Light”, echoes Eliot’s meditation on time as both linear and cyclical, a concept deeply rooted in Korean philosophy. Korean art embraces impermanence and the importance of the present moment. Guffogg’s paintings, with their shifting luminosity and depth, reflect this philosophical understanding, existing between presence and absence, solidity and fluidity, stillness and motion. Guffogg’s process is a meditation in itself—he paints daily, working 8 to 10 hours in solitude, surrounded by nature at his ranch. Written in charcoal on the walls of his studio are stanzas from the poem, which Guffogg internalizes over long periods of time, until colors are sensorially connected to the words. Then the title informs the painting. His paintings emerge as moments in time that are seemingly without time as they are visually moving while still, revealing traces of his meditations through color and form. Another significant piece, “At the Still Point of the Turning World – Into the Rose Garden”, is a multi-colored variation of reds, purples, and ribbons of white. The title references Eliot’s symbolic garden—a place of purity, transformation, and the passage of time. In Korean culture, gardens similarly serve as spaces of contemplation, where nature becomes both a teacher and a metaphor. Rather than depicting these themes directly, Guffogg creates an abstract experience where color, line, and movement evoke transformation. Guffogg’s technique involves no preliminary sketches, and no assistants—only the repetition of intuitive movement. Each painting is made up of thousands of brushstrokes of glazes mixed with oil paint, creating an extraordinary depth that appears to suspend time itself. This meticulous process aligns with his belief that each brushstroke is a summoning of memory, a mark that bears witness to the unseen forces of existence. His synesthesia, the ability to perceive color as sound, further deepens this interplay. His paintings become silent symphonies, their tonalities resonating internally with the viewer. Guffogg’s use of color is never jarring; instead, his complementary hues create a sense of balance, inviting introspection rather than demanding interpretation. His works do not depict existential crises—they pose questions, seeking revelations of beauty and the unknown. In Guffogg’s work, color is not merely pigment—it is a presence, vibrating beyond the visual into something sensorial, emotional, and spiritual. His mastery of light and shadow recalls the Old Masters, yet he reinterprets their techniques for the contemporary world. At a time of constant acceleration, Guffogg’s paintings offer a rare moment of pause—a space for contemplation and transcendence. His work is deeply connected to art history, influenced by Kandinsky, Monet, and Turner, yet distinctly his own. Though this marks Guffogg’s first exhibition in Korea, it is not an introduction but a reconnection. His paintings, infused with rhythm, light, and emotion, align with the artistic and philosophical traditions of Korean thought. They invite us to engage with the essence of life itself—a dance of being—a luminous stillness within the turning world. By. Victoria Chapman CATALOG View Catalog here INSTALLATION VIEWS

- BECOMING WITHOUT END
AUG 14 - SEP 27, 2025 Intro Catalog Installation Views Next [C1] New York BECOMING WITHOUT END AUG 14 - SEP 27, 2025 Ed Moses INTRO Within the canon of postwar American abstraction, Ed Moses holds a singular and paradoxical position: both foundational and defiantly fluid. As a key figure of the Los Angeles–based “Cool School” in the late 1950s, Moses exhibited alongside Ed Ruscha, Robert Irwin, and others at the seminal Ferus Gallery—yet consistently resisted the constraints of any one movement. He was never static, never still: not on the periphery, but always in flux. Becoming Without End reframes Moses not only as a central figure in West Coast art, but as a major force in the larger arc of contemporary abstraction. Over six decades, Moses dissolved the boundaries between gesture and geometry, structure and improvisation, through a relentlessly process-driven practice. His paintings emerged less as composed images than as lived acts—visual records of risk, immediacy, and transformation. Moses’s trajectory traces a profound lineage across postwar art: rooted in the performative mark-making of Abstract Expressionism, moving through the ascetic clarity of Postminimalism, and extending into the experimental materiality of contemporary process-based work. Each body of work marked not a destination but a turning point—a leap into new formal vocabularies without disavowing the past. He moved forward by rupture, yet carried continuity like breath. In an era increasingly defined by consistency, authorship, and visual branding, Moses’s career offers a radical counter-model: a life’s work animated by impermanence, doubt, and becoming. He rejected the notion of signature style in favor of constant reinvention—of painting as an act of surrender, not mastery. This exhibition is not a retrospective in the conventional sense. Becoming Without End is an invocation: a call to encounter Moses’s work as an evolving field of energy, where each surface is a threshold. It invites us to engage with the deeper ethos of artistic creation—not as a quest for finality, but as a perpetual opening. CATALOG View Catalog here INSTALLATION VIEWS
